About FlowCath®

Fuel Cells (FC) are electrochemical devices that convert fuel (e.g. hydrogen, methanol) directly into electricity at higher efficiency than internal combustion engines and have the potential for higher energy storage capacity than lithium-ion batteries. Fuel Cells have the potential to become the dominant technology for power packs for portable electronics and automotive engines.

ACAL Energy's radical approach to the challenges of the oxygen electrode (cathode), creates a fit for purpose system that has demonstrated the potential to provide a vastly more efficient power to size ratio (power density) than seen today or expected from current development programmes and to significantly reduce the cost of Fuel Cells, by removing the need for precious metal catalysts on that side of the cell.

ACAL Energy's technology applies innovations in chemistry to overcome the commercial barriers of a previously proven technical route for the cathode. ACAL Energy has applied known solutions from other applications to demonstrate the potential for dramatically improved performance. The key to ACAL Energy's innovation is leveraging these solutions from other industries in a systems based approach which will reduce the current forecasted timescales for commercialisation of Fuel Cell systems.

As a cathode system the technology can be adapted to work with any fuel source including hydrogen, methanol, ethanol and sodium borohydride. By using non-precious metal catalysts and adapting the engineering of the standard Fuel Cell stack, the company has demonstrated that being powered by FlowCath® will enable cost effective power generation, as well as providing solutions to a number of other technological barriers that are preventing the global commercialisation of Fuel Cells.

ACAL Energy is applying new knowledge, science and innovation to capture the power from electrochemistry to address the modern imperative for environmentally acceptable energy sources.
